996 Carrera 4S: Is the Widebody Worth the Premium?

The 4S median is $36,958 across 52 verified auction sales since 2021. The narrow-body Carrera 3.6 it shares its engine with sits at $27,500. That $9,458 gap is the widebody question, priced.

What the $9,500 buys

Mechanically, the 4S is a Carrera 3.6 with the Turbo's wide rear bodywork, all-wheel drive, and the Turbo's larger brakes. Same M96 3.6-liter engine, same interior, same maintenance profile. The premium is almost entirely visual and traction-related: the stance, the reflector strip across the rear, and the all-weather drivetrain.

4S prices by mileage band

Mileage bandSalesMedian
Under 15,0000—
15,000–30,0007$52,000
30,000–50,00011$44,996
50,000–75,0009$41,996
75,000+25$31,250

Two things stand out. First, no sub-15k-mile 4S has sold at auction in the recent data — the truly collector-grade cars either don't exist or trade privately. Second, the premium compresses with miles but never disappears: at 75k+ miles the 4S medians $31,250 against $23,225 for a Carrera 3.6 at the same mileage — roughly $8,000 of widebody value survives even on the highest-mile cars. In the 30–50k band the gap is wider, about $13,000 ($44,996 vs $32,062). An earlier version of this page, built on 17 Bring a Trailer sales, had the premium evaporating entirely at high miles. With 52 sales across five sources, it doesn't.

Does the premium hold?

At the top end, yes: the strongest 4S sale in the dataset is $65,000 (April 2022 — 2005 coupe, 26,000 miles, 6-speed, Silver), a number no narrow-body Carrera 3.6 touches at that mileage. At the very bottom, individual tired cars still fall to Carrera money: the cheapest 4S sold for $19,250 (November 2023 — 2004 coupe, 160,600 miles, 6-speed, Black). But that's the extreme tail. Band by band, the widebody holds $8,000–$13,000 over the narrow-body car at every mileage. Buy accordingly.

Notable 4S sales

The honest math: a ~$45,000 4S with 40,000 miles vs. a ~$32,000 Carrera 3.6 with the same miles. Same engine, same gearbox, same IMS bearing to deal with. You're paying about $13,000 for the widebody, AWD, and Turbo brakes at that mileage — and about $9,500 at the overall median. If the stance makes you happy every time you walk up to it, it's money well spent, and unlike the old data suggested, most of it is still there when you sell.
